Step Parent Adoption
Providing Knowledgeable Counsel for Step-Parent Adoptions
There are many reasons a step-parent may want to adopt a child. Whatever the reasons, Attorney Kathleen O’Connor will help the process flow effectively and efficiency. In order for a child to be adopted by a step-parent in Minnesota there are several requirements:
- The non-custodial biological parent must consent to the adoption
- If the child is older than 14 years, the child must consent to the adoption
- The step-parent must live in MN
- The parties must comply with all requirements of Minnesota Law
Through this adoption process the step-parent will be granted all the rights, responsibilities and duties as if the child were born to the step-parent. If the step parent and the parent later divorce, the step parent will be able to seek custody and parenting time and will be responsible to pay child support as they have taken the place of the biological parent.
